about

Back on the roster for the first time since 2014, drone lords Synsophony have changed a lot. The fog of blackened doom that clung to their music like a funeral shroud has largely lifted, lingering only in the shadows here and there. In its wake, surprisingly, we find a striking desert ambience that leaves lots of room for the duo’s 90s-Neil-Young-via-2010s-Earth riffary to shine through.

It’s not all Southwestern guitar worship though, some wild hair metal inspired vocal flourishes rear their heads, jazz drum textures wander through, cellos creak, RFK pops up to discuss violence in America, and synths reminiscent of Mark Frost’s X-Files theme come and go.

That’s a lot of sandy ground to trode in under 20 minutes, but what else would we expect from one of the UK’s most consistently inventive “drone metal” bands?
